Pedestrian killed after being struck by freight train in Downers Grove

According to Downers Grove police, officers were called to the train tracks near Washington Street at approximately 12:45 a.m. Sunday for reports of a person that had been struck by a train. According to a preliminary investigation, the person was seen on foot south of the railroad crossing. The person attempted to walk north across the tracks and was struck by a westbound freight train. Police said the crossing gates and lights were activated at Washington Street at the time of the collision. That individual was pronounced dead on the scene. As of 8:30 a.m. Sunday, the biggest snowfall total reported in the NBC 5 viewing area came in Rensselaer, Indiana, where 11.5 inches of accumulation were reported.
